Evaluation and Assessment

Neurodiversity-Affirming Approach

I take a neurodiversity-affirming approach to evaluations, which means I do not pathologize individuals or their behavior. Instead, my focus is on identifying strengths as well as areas where additional support or environmental modifications are needed to help the child or adolescent thrive.

A diagnosis is not about labeling—it’s a tool:

• It helps individuals better understand themselves.

• It allows families and communities to better understand children or adolescents.

• It serves as a key to unlock increased support, resources, and accommodations.

Insurance Coverage

We are in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Blue Plus, HealthPartners, HealthPartners PMAP, Cigna, UCare, UCare PMAP, Tricare, and Straight MA. Otherwise, we are private pay, and can take HSA and FSA as well. I also strongly recommend that you double check with your individual health plan to make sure we are in network as there are some individual plans that have a more narrow network within those companies we have contracts with that may or may not include us.

The Evaluation Process

The evaluation is comprehensive and tailored to each individual. It involves the following components:

• Parent Session(s): One to three sessions, if applicable, to gather developmental history and discuss concerns.

• Online and In-Person Questionnaires: Completed by all parents or guardians with whom the child/adolescent lives and/or who wish to contribute information.

• Child/Adolescent Questionnaires: Online and in-person, if applicable.

• Direct Testing and Assessment: One to four sessions with the child/adolescent to complete the in-person testing.

About the Assessor

This evaluation will be conducted by me, Dr. Kai Gunty, PhD, LMFT, LPCC. I am a doctoral-level provider with extensive education and training in assessment, testing, evaluation, and diagnosis. Additionally, I have taught undergraduate- and graduate-level courses on assessment and psychological testing.

Sessions and Billing

• Parent and child/adolescent sessions will be billed to insurance as psychotherapy sessions. In Minnesota, anyone who is not a licensed psychologist (including myself) cannot bill insurance for psychological testing, so testing sessions themselves are billed as regular psychotherapy sessions with the goal of supporting understanding and growth.

• As evaluations are highly labor-intensive, there is a $1000 private pay fee to cover scoring, interpretation of testing, and report writing. This fee cannot be billed to insurance.
